“Hummingbird”

Hummingbird, up in the trees
Hummingbird, she sings to me
Hummingbird, flying high
Hummingbird, into the night

Hummingbird of love and faith
Hummingbird, she knows her way
Hummingbird, free of sin
Hummingbird, where life begins

Hummingbird, I won’t fly with you tonight
The wind is blowing fierce, and I’m scared
Hummingbird, I’ll lift up my window
And I’ll wait for you to fly back home to me

Hummingbird, I apologize
Hummingbird, your loving eyes
Hummingbird, I’ve been a fool
Hummingbird, don’t know what to do

Hummingbird, so wild and free
Hummingbird, don’t forget about me

Hummingbird, I won’t fly with you tonight
The wind is blowing fierce, and I’m scared
Hummingbird, I’ll lift up my window
And I’ll wait for you to fly back home to me

Hummingbird, up in the trees
Hummingbird, she sings to me

“Hummingbird” came to me from a dream. I remember seeing this tiny bird that felt like the purest form of beauty I’d ever witnessed. Something untouched, innocent, and perfectly alive in the moment. There wasn’t an ounce of sin in it. It just existed, free and present, reminding me what it means to simply be. When I woke up, I wrote a poem trying to capture that feeling, and it eventually turned into this song.

At its core, “Hummingbird” is about grace and fear. The push and pull between wanting to soar with something pure, and being afraid of the wind that comes with it. It’s an apology, a love letter, and a prayer all at once. Writing it was my way of preserving that vision from my dream. A glimpse of something divine that I didn’t want to lose.
